Shane is twenty-five, recently sober, and writing a book he's calling a memoir, though he'll be the first to tell you it's not that simple. Lying his way through rehab seemed easier than the alternative, until a cracked skull and a stretch at a treatment center buried in the Pennsylvania mountains finally caught up with him.
Ever since he was a kid, the sound of sirens has undone him. It's the one sound that drags him straight back to the loss he's spent most of his life drinking around instead of through.
Then there's Findley. Black Chuck Taylors, a punk rock heart, and a past she won't talk about. Shane isn't supposed to fall for another patient. He does anyway. And when Findley vanishes from the facility in the middle of the night, she leaves behind an address in Baltimore, a promise he's not sure he can keep, and more questions than answers.
But it isn't Baltimore where Shane ends up. It's a one-way drive south, from the Pennsylvania mountains to the southernmost point in the country, chasing Hemingway's old idea of paradise and hoping sobriety looks as good as the postcards.
*Sound of Sirens* is a faux memoir about rock bottom, the lies we tell to survive it, and the unlikely places we go looking for hope.
