Review:

Godspeed, Good Man is an engaging story about hope, grief, letting go, surprises and memories. With the reminiscence of all things, good and bad, delve into this touchingly well written book.

We follow Harrison Goodman, a 72 years old widower who is living out his days by reading obituaries, drinking whisky out of a coffee mug, listening to old jazz while missing the love of his life. Every shade of colour and moments of happiness left him when his wife, Enid passed away. Harrison became more recluse buy cutting of all the ties of communications from his family, friends and church.

One day while cleaning up the basement he finds a box full of index cards. These are Enid's recipes that she has written. He decides to try out one of her recipe cook it well while remembering memories.

Sometimes memories make you go down a path of that you would rather forget then to re-live. As shocking revelations are made, the reality comes into focus.

This was such a surprising read. Each chapter tells you more about Harrison's life in conjunction with memories as well as the harsh reality. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions as I could feel like being a part of the narration. Nicholas Baldwin's immensely engaging writing style had me captivated right from the beginning. He has created Harrison's character and weaved his reminiscences in a way that aids the readers to become seamlessly involved. The incorporation of Enid's mouthwatering recipes were also the highlights of the story. All I have to say is, this book had so many shopping surprises and an unexpected conclusion that I read it cover to cover in just one sitting.

I'd recommend this to readers who are intrigued by stories that have stories within themselves. A simple yet powerful read that in the end leaves you speechless. A definite must read.
